SIGITE 2005 Workshops
H1: Accreditation, Program Educational Objectives and Program Outcomes
Barbara Price, Han Reichgelt, Diane Hamilton & Jim Leone
9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Robert Treat Hotel
One of the primary driving forces behind the establishment of SIGITE was the desire to allow for accreditation of baccalaureate programs in Information Technology. SIGITE has been successful in its pursuit of this goal. In the fall of 2003, ABET's Board of Directors accepted general accreditation criteria for programs in computing on first reading and for piloting in the 2004/2005 accreditation cycle. More recently, it also accepted, on first reading, discipline specific accreditation criteria for programs in Information Technology.
In line with many other accreditation agencies nationally and internationally, ABET has moved to a model of accreditation that is based more on outcomes. In order to be eligible for accreditation, a program must have formulated a set of program outcomes (defined as statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation) and program educational objectives (defined as statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve). The program must also have in place a documented process to assess the extent to which graduates meet these objectives and outcomes and to use the results of these assessments to improve the program.
The objective of the workshop is two-fold. First, the workshop discusses the general ABET CAC accreditation criteria for programs in computing and the program specific accreditation criteria for information technology and describes the accreditation process from application for candidacy to final review by CAC. Second, the workshop will discuss how to formulate program educational objectives and program outcomes.
The workshop presenters are thoroughly familiar with the ABET CAC Accreditation Criteria and have served either as team chair or program evaluators of programs in Information Systems, or as chairs of programs that have sought accreditation under the new ABET CAC Accreditation Criteria.
On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the ABET CAC Accreditation Criteria;
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the ABET CAC accreditation process;
Develop specific, measurable program outcomes.
The workshop is intended for programs seeking ABET CAC accreditation.
