Game Expo Events
Game Development
Submit your game to compete for prizes against NJIT's best game developers. This contest is only open to NJIT students and alumni.
Homebrew
Games programmed entirely from scratch with only a few companion libraries to assist in the development. These are generally done in C/C++. These games are generally simple with poorer graphics, since everything relies on the programmer.
Mod
Games made with an existing game engine, such as Half-Life, Doom, Unreal or Torque. These games generally look better and function easier due to the foundation of a professional game engine.
Flash/Web
Games designed to be played through or with web technologies. These can be done with Flash, Java and other tools. The games are generally simpler with decent graphics.
Level Editing
This showcases the developer's ability to create realistic environments as well as the ability to set up an interesting gaming experience given an existing game world. This may sometimes involve some degree of scripting. Common games that feature this are Unreal Tournament, Warcraft III and Half-Life
2D Painting
This showcases the game artist's ability to work with digital painting programs and to work within fine limitations. 2D artwork is utilized in a number of different ways from animated game Sprites, to backgrounds, textures and promotional artwork.
3D Modeling
This showcases the game artist's ability to work with 3 Dimensional space. 3D models are used prominently in games both as the player models and world objects as well as for almost all graphical elements in a 3D game. This will involve creating the object mesh, creating and painting the skin, animation and in some cases placement of lighting. 3D work is typically done with 3D Studio Max, Maya and Blender.
High School Game Development
This is a category open to current High School students only. Any game development project created by High School students is elibible for judging. Projects will be judged based on amount of original work, innovation, art and functionality. Game submitted do not need to be completed projects, playable demonstrations will be sufficient. Winning team will be awarded a certificate and prize.
Tournament
Show off your 1337 skills and compete for prizes! Sign up for one of the games below, or request games that you'd like to have added!
*Note: You must bring your own computer to compete in PC games. Only games with pre-registered players will run.
